Let’s talk about responsible gambling

Today marks the first day of Responsible Gambling Week, a cross-industry initiative to promote responsible gambling, with the theme “Let’s Talk about Responsible Gambling”. The initiative is organised by the Industry Group for Responsible Gambling (“IGRG”), chaired by John Hagan, and is intended to be a genuine and engaging conversation with customers, the wider public and other stakeholders to raise awareness of responsible gambling.

Responsible Gambling Week is a fantastic opportunity for the gambling industry to raise awareness of what tools are available to help people gamble responsibly, and share information on how to access help and support, for those who need it. What makes this week unique is that it will be the first time the industry has come together to speak with one voice to raise awareness.

The initiative, which is designed to encourage more conversations across all media and in the retail and online environment, runs until 18 October 2017. Please take some time to consider how to get involved. Having the whole industry behind Responsible Gambling Week is essential to its success. It is a positive message that gives a more accurate picture of the industry and its ongoing work around social responsibility, at a time when there is so much negativity around.

This campaign is about uniting together, as one socially responsible industry. You can support the week by:
• Liking the campaign’s Facebook and Twitter pages @RGWeek2017
• Sharing information about your social responsibility measures

John Hagan, Chair of IGRG, said: “Social responsibility is fundamental to the gambling industry’s approach, and we are all dedicated, year-round, to promoting responsible gambling. But what makes this week so special is the whole industry coming together and being vocal about social responsibility – coordinating and sharing the same messages to secure maximum impact…Having the whole industry behind Responsible Gambling Week is essential to its success, and we have operators across Great Britain and across all gambling activities taking part. Their full support and involvement is what will make this exciting initiative worthwhile. It is what will help us reach more people than ever before.”

Sarah Harrison, Chief Executive of the Gambling Commission, said: “It is imperative that gambling operators meet their obligations and take every step to ensure gambling is safe so we’re pleased to see the industry coming together to raise awareness of responsible gambling.”

Sir Christopher Kelly, Chair of the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board, said: “…We need to learn from the experience of consumers and their families, and to use this to make gambling safer. So I welcome the theme of IGRG’s Responsible Gambling Week “let’s talk about responsible gambling. Let’s make sure we learn as much as we can from it.”
